Molly Thompson-Smith is an international rock climber competing for the UK. In the UK she has been a star in Lead climbing and at just 20 she was five times National Champion. She was born in Ladbroke Grove in London and first began to climb at age 8 in the Westway sports centre. She proved to be an amazing talent and at the age of 16 and won the European Youth Cup and was ranked no. 1 in the world.
As a senior she continued to win places on the podium and in 2017 she came third in the Senior Lead World Cup Championship in Kranj, Slovenia, and finished 7th in the world overall. In 2018 she won the National Championships and in the following yar she was recovering from her injury to her finger yet still managed to compete and make it to the finals of the IFSC Lead World Cup in Chamonix – she finished in sixth place.
Thompson-Smith’s ambition has been to compete at the Tokyo Olympics. The competition at the Olympics requires climbers to compete in all 3 disciplines Lead, Boulder and Speed. This requires a very rounded athlete with training in strength as well as speed. Thompson-Smith has been focusing on the Olympics in her training and now divides her time between the UK climbing hub in Sheffield and Innsbruck in Austria, Thompson-Smith has an exciting future ahead in the sport and looks forward to making her Olympic debut.
