Moritz Seider

Moritz Seider was born on April 6, 2001, in Zell, Germany. His ice hockey career began in his native Germany, where he played for Jungadler Mannheim in the German Development League. Seider quickly emerged as a top prospect, with his skills on defense drawing significant attention. In 2018, he made his debut for Adler Mannheim in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) at just 16 years old. His rapid development and strong performances led him to be drafted sixth overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, a testament to his potential and talent.

Following his draft, Seider signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Red Wings. He spent the 2019-20 season with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League (AHL), gaining experience in North American professional hockey. Due to the delayed North American season in 2020, he was loaned to Rögle BK of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) for the 2020-21 season. During his time in Sweden, Seider further honed his abilities, earning the SHL Elite Prospect’s Award and being named a finalist for SHL Defenseman of the Year. He also served as captain for the German national junior team at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship, where he was a top three player for his team, contributing six assists in seven games.

Seider made his NHL debut with the Detroit Red Wings at the start of the 2021-22 season. He quickly established himself as a key player, named the NHL Rookie of the Month for October and becoming one of only a few defensemen in 40 years to achieve at least 50 points as a rookie. His outstanding performance was recognized with the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL rookie of the year in 2021-22. He has continued to be a foundational piece for the Red Wings, signing a seven-year, $59.85 million contract in 2024. Internationally, Seider has represented Germany multiple times, earning a silver medal at the 2023 IIHF World Championship.
