Rising ice hockey superstar Mortitz Seider made the world notice when he won the Calder Trophy in 2022 as the National Hockey League (NHL)’s top rookie. The German phenomenon – who plays for the Detroit Red Wings – became only the sixth Red Wing in history to win the award, and expectations are sky-high for the youngster heading into the 2022-23 season. The 6ft 4in defenceman cemented himself as the top defender on the young team during his remarkable rookie season, finishing his season with 50 points in 82 games – the highest scoring rookie defenceman in the league by a wide margin. If the young German can improve on his unbelievable rookie season, he is likely to vault himself into talks for the coveted Norris Trophy in 2022-23.
Born in Zell, Germany, the defenceman has done nothing but impress since he was selected in the 2019 Draft, sixth overall by the Detroit Red Wings. He previously made an impact in the American Hockey League (AHL) when he was 18, and earned the title of best defenceman in the Swedish Hockey League when he 19.
Seider has also been a force to be reckoned with playing internationally for Germany. At the 2019 World Junior Championship Division IA tournament he led his country’s team to a first place finish and promotion, leading all defensemen in scoring. At the 2021 IIHF World Championship, he was selected a member of the All Star Team and was awarded Best Defenceman by the IIHF directorate.
