Born on May 14, 2001, in Orlando, Florida, Jack Hughes began his hockey career at a young age, displaying exceptional talent. He distinguished himself in the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP), leading the Under-18 team with 112 points (34 goals, 78 assists) in 50 games during the 2018-19 season. This performance led to him becoming the fifth NTDP player to be selected first overall in the NHL Draft. Hughes holds NTDP records for assists (154) and points (228) in 110 games over two seasons. His success extended to international competition, where he led the 2019 IIHF World Under-18 Championship with 20 points (nine goals, 11 assists) for the United States, setting a tournament record with 32 points (14 goals, 18 assists) across two tournaments (2018, 2019), surpassing Alex Ovechkin’s previous record.
Hughes was drafted first overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. He signed a three-year entry-level contract on July 12, 2019. He recorded his first NHL point on October 17, 2019, and scored his first NHL goal two days later in a 1-0 win against the Vancouver Canucks. In the 2021-22 season, Hughes came into his own with 56 points (26 goals, 30 assists) in 49 games, including his first NHL hat trick on November 26, 2022, against the Washington Capitals. On November 30, 2021, Hughes signed an eight-year, $64 million contract extension with the Devils, solidifying his role as a key player.
The 2022-23 season marked a significant milestone for Hughes, as he achieved career highs with 43 goals, 56 assists, and 99 points, leading the Devils to a franchise-record 52 wins. He became the first Devils player since Zach Parise in 2008-09 to score 40 goals in a season. Hughes also broke Patrik Elias’ franchise record of 96 points. In his Stanley Cup Playoffs debut in 2023, he scored a penalty-shot goal against the New York Rangers, becoming the fastest player in franchise history (325 games) to reach 300 points, surpassing Kirk Muller’s record. Hughes was named to the United States roster for the 4 Nations Face-Off during the 2024-25 season, further demonstrating his impact on the international stage. He has been named to the NHL All-Star Game in 2022, 2023, and 2024. His brothers, Quinn and Luke Hughes, also play professional ice hockey, with Quinn playing for the Vancouver Canucks and Luke joining Jack on the New Jersey Devils.
