About

Mustafa Shakir was born on August 21, 1976, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and spent his formative years in Harlem, New York. He pursued his education at The New School, graduating in 2001. Prior to his acting career, Shakir worked as a barber. His early career saw him take on various roles in film and television, building a foundation for later breakout performances. His dedication to his craft is reflected in his diverse filmography, which includes both mainstream productions and independent projects.

Shakir gained significant recognition for his role as John ‘Bushmaster’ McIver in the second season of “Marvel’s Luke Cage” in 2018. This was a pivotal role following earlier auditions for other notable characters in the Marvel universe, such as M’Baku in “Black Panther” and Black Lightning in the eponymous TV series. His acting range extends to projects like HBO’s “The Deuce” (2017-2019), where he played Big Mike. In 2021, Shakir took on the role of Jet Black in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of “Cowboy Bebop,” further cementing his presence in popular culture.

Beyond acting, Shakir has also contributed as a writer and director. He co-wrote and directed the short film “Untitled Symphony” in 2013, and also wrote for “The Dark Side of the Earth” in the same year. His recent film work includes “Emancipation” (2022), “Ghosted” (2023), and “Assassin” (2023). He is set to appear in “Love Hurts” (2025) and “Song Sung Blue,” currently in post-production. Shakir maintains a strict vegan lifestyle, which he attributes to aiding his physical recovery and overall well-being, particularly for demanding roles.
