Olympic gold medalist Mutaz Essa Barshim is a Qatari track and field athlete who competes in the high jump. He was the silver medalist at the 2012 Summer Olympics, where he became the first Qatari athlete ever to win an Olympic medal, and went on to win gold at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He also won bronze medals at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics and 2015 World Championships In Athletics.
Barshim was born in Doha, Qatar. His father is from Sudan and his mother is Qatari. He competed in his first international tournament at age 16, representing Qatar at the 2007 Asian Championships in Athletics. He finished sixth in the high jump competition with a personal best jump of 2.10 meters. Barshim’s breakthrough year came in 2010, when he won the gold medal at the Asian Games with a jump of 2.32 meters. He also won the silver medal at the World Indoor Championships with a jump of 2.28 meters.
Barshim defended his Asian Games title in 2014, winning gold with a jump of 2.38 meters. He also won bronze at the 2015 World Championships In Athletics with a jump of 2.34 meters. Barshim finally achieved his Olympic dream at the 2016 Summer Olympics, winning the gold medal in the high jump with a jump of 2.28 meters. With this victory, he became the first Qatari athlete to win an Olympic gold medal. Barshim has been ranked as the world’s No. 1 high jumper by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
