About

Nancy Kerrigan, born on October 13, 1969, in Stoneham, Massachusetts, began her figure skating journey at age six. Growing up in a family of modest means, her father often worked multiple jobs and even drove a Zamboni in exchange for her skating lessons, highlighting the early dedication to her athletic development. She started taking private lessons at age eight and secured her first competition win, the Boston Open, by age nine. Kerrigan’s initial ascent in the sport was marked by her strong jumping abilities, though she faced challenges with compulsory figures until their elimination from competitions after the 1990 season. Her commitment and early talent laid the groundwork for a successful career in figure skating.

Kerrigan reached national prominence in 1987, placing fourth at the junior level of the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Her senior debut followed, with consistent improvements in national rankings: 12th in 1988, fifth in 1989 (where she also earned a bronze medal at the Winter Universiade), and fourth in 1990. In 1991, she secured third place at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships and a bronze medal at the World Figure Skating Championships, contributing to a historic sweep of the women’s podium by a single country. The 1992 season saw her achieve second place nationally, a bronze medal at the 1992 Winter Olympics, and a silver medal at the World Championships. She became the U.S. National Champion in 1993. Her career was significantly impacted by an assault in January 1994, which garnered extensive media attention. Despite the incident, she recovered to compete in the 1994 Winter Olympics, earning a silver medal, solidifying her status as a resilient and celebrated athlete.

Following her competitive skating career, Kerrigan transitioned into professional performances, appearing in shows like ‘Champions on Ice’ and ‘Broadway on Ice.’ She also ventured into television, hosting ‘Nancy Kerrigan’s World of Skating’ and serving as a special correspondent for ‘Entertainment Tonight’ during the 2010 Winter Olympics. Beyond entertainment, she became a national spokeswoman for Fight for Sight in 2003, advocating for awareness and support for the vision-impaired, a cause close to her due to her mother’s legal blindness. Her media appearances include a guest spot on ‘Boy Meets World’ in 1995, a role in the film ‘Blades of Glory’ (2007), and an appearance on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ in 2017. These diverse engagements reflect her enduring public presence and commitment to various causes and projects.
