Nathan Donald Diaz, born on April 16, 1985, in Stockton, California, began his martial arts training alongside his elder brother, Nick Diaz, at the age of 11. He initially competed in bare-knuckle MMA and then officially debuted in professional MMA, primarily fighting for World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC). A pivotal moment in his early career was challenging for the WEC Lightweight Championship in 2006. His career trajectory significantly changed when he became a contestant on The Ultimate Fighter 5, an all-lightweight season, which he ultimately won in 2007, earning a Knockout of the Night award and securing his place in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Within the UFC, Diaz quickly became recognized for his aggressive fighting style and submission prowess, earning several Fight of the Night and Submission of the Night bonuses. Notable early UFC victories include submissions over Alvin Robinson and Kurt Pellegrino in 2008, and Melvin Guillard in 2009. He transitioned between lightweight and welterweight divisions, demonstrating adaptability.
