About

Nathan Donald Diaz, born on April 16, 1985, in Stockton, California, began his martial arts training alongside his elder brother, Nick Diaz, at the age of 11. He initially competed in bare-knuckle MMA and then officially debuted in professional MMA, primarily fighting for World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC). A pivotal moment in his early career was challenging for the WEC Lightweight Championship in 2006. His career trajectory significantly changed when he became a contestant on The Ultimate Fighter 5, an all-lightweight season, which he ultimately won in 2007, earning a Knockout of the Night award and securing his place in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Within the UFC, Diaz quickly became recognized for his aggressive fighting style and submission prowess, earning several Fight of the Night and Submission of the Night bonuses. Notable early UFC victories include submissions over Alvin Robinson and Kurt Pellegrino in 2008, and Melvin Guillard in 2009. He transitioned between lightweight and welterweight divisions, demonstrating adaptability. A significant achievement came in 2012 when he received his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Cesar Gracie, shortly before submitting Jim Miller, marking the first time Miller had been stopped in his MMA career. Diaz also challenged for the UFC Lightweight Championship in 2012 against Benson Henderson, solidifying his status as a top contender.

Diaz continued to achieve milestones, including a TKO victory over Gray Maynard in 2013 and a unanimous decision win against Michael Johnson in 2015, which famously led to his call-out of Conor McGregor. Their two fights in 2016 were highly publicized, with Diaz securing a submission win in their first encounter at UFC 196 and a rematch at UFC 202 earning Fight of the Night honors for both. After leaving the UFC as a free agent in 2022, following a Performance of the Night submission victory over Tony Ferguson at UFC 279, Diaz ventured into professional boxing. He founded his combat sports promotion company, Real Fight Inc., in 2022, and made his professional boxing debut in 2023 against Jake Paul and more recently against Jorge Masvidal in 2024, winning by majority decision.
