Neil Duff, born on July 22, 1972, in Ballyclare, Northern Ireland, began playing darts in his late 20s and did not pursue a professional career until approaching the age of 50. Prior to becoming a full-time darts player, Duff worked as a joiner. His entry into professional darts marked a significant career change, leading to notable achievements.
Duff’s career progressed with various competitive performances. He reached the quarter-finals of the 2019 World Masters, an early indicator of his potential. A pivotal moment in his career occurred in 2022 when he won the inaugural WDF World Darts Championship at Lakeside, becoming the first Northern Irish world darts champion and the first player to win on debut at Lakeside since 2012. He defeated Justin Thompson and Nick Fullwell, staged a comeback from 3-0 down against Jim McEwan in the quarter-finals, beat Richard Veenstra 5-2 in the semi-finals, and secured the final victory against Thibault Tricole with a 6-5 score. This win occurred on his daughter’s eighteenth birthday, adding a personal milestone to his professional achievement. Following this victory, he was celebrated in his hometown of Ballyclare.
In the 2023 WDF World Darts Championship, Duff defended his title, reaching the quarter-finals before being defeated by Chris Landman. After this tournament, he was ranked number one in the WDF World Rankings due to other players receiving PDC Tour Cards and being removed from the WDF rankings. He continued his competitive play into 2024, again reaching the quarter-finals of the WDF World Darts Championship.
