Neil Alexander Robertson was born on February 11, 1982, in Melbourne, Australia. He started playing snooker at the age of 11 in his family’s pool club. At 14, he won the Australian under-18 snooker championship. He turned professional for the 1998–99 season, but initially struggled, leading him to rejoin the tour in the 2003–04 season. After relocating to Leicester, England, he experienced homesickness and returned to Australia, working in a pub before winning the World Under-21 Snooker Championship in New Zealand in July 2003. This victory spurred his return to the WPBSA main tour, settling in Cambridge, England, where he found success more quickly. In December 2003, he qualified for the 2004 Masters and reached his first ranking event quarter-final at the 2004 European Open.
Robertson’s career progressed steadily, culminating in his first ranking title at the 2006 Grand Prix, making him the first Australian to win a ranking event. He secured his second ranking title at the Welsh Open in 2007, battling back from a deficit to win. A significant milestone occurred in 2010 when he became the World Snooker Champion, the first player from outside the UK and Ireland to do so since 1980. This achievement was soon followed by becoming world number one after winning the 2010 World Open. In 2012, Robertson won The Masters, and in 2013, he completed snooker’s Triple Crown by winning the UK Championship, a feat unmatched by any other non-UK player.
In the 2013–14 season, Robertson made history by becoming the first player to achieve 100 century breaks in a single season, concluding with a record 103 centuries. He has maintained consistent performance, winning at least one professional tournament every year between 2006 and 2022. Despite a temporary dip in rankings, he continued adding titles, including the 2025 World Grand Prix and the 2025 Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters. In September 2025, he recorded his 1000th career century, joining an elite group of players. He joined the WPBSA Players Board in July 2025 and was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in January 2025 for his contributions.
