Nick Clegg, dubbed Sir Nicholas Peter William Clegg, is a British former politician who served as the leader of the Liberal Democrats and as the Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Clegg’s well-established background comes from his studies of political philosophy at the University of Minnesota followed by European affairs at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium. In addition to his international education, Clegg found himself travelling extensively and working in numerous positions in countries such as Germany, Austria, Finland, the United States, Belgium, and Hungary. His dedication and profound interest in politics led him to the esteemed position of an adviser to Sir Leon Brittan, a European Union commissioner and a cabinet minister in Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government. Clegg accomplished some marvelous work with his time in government, including providing aid in the negotiations of the admission of China to the World Trade Organization (WTO). In addition, he provided the utmost support to Russia in its bid for membership to the WTO.
Brittan viewed and respected Clegg as one of the most promising politicians of his generation and it was in 1999 that he was elected as a Liberal Democrat member of the European Parliament. Clegg had an astounding run in government as he reached the position of Deputy Prime Minister which he secured from 2010 to 2015. In 2017, he was awarded a knighthood in the New Year Honors list and was the same year he handed in his official resignation. However, given his vast work internationally, he joined Facebook as head of global policy and communication in 2018.
