Nicholas Gunnar Goody was born on July 6, 1991, in Orlando, FL. His baseball journey began at University High School as a shortstop before transitioning to pitching at the State College of Florida, Manatee–Sarasota. During his freshman year, he served as the team’s closer. As a sophomore, Goody became a starting pitcher, achieving a 6-2 record with a 1.29 ERA and an impressive 114 strikeouts in 84 innings pitched, including a 19-strikeout game. He earned the Suncoast Conference Pitcher of the Year award. The New York Yankees initially drafted him in the 22nd round of the 2011 MLB draft, but Goody opted not to sign, instead transferring to Louisiana State University (LSU) to play for the LSU Tigers baseball team in 2012. At LSU, he took on the closer role, securing 11 saves, the third-highest in the Southeastern Conference.
Goody’s professional career began when the New York Yankees selected him in the sixth round of the 2012 MLB draft. That year, he played for the Staten Island Yankees, Charleston RiverDogs, and Tampa Yankees, posting a 1.12 ERA and seven saves across 23 games. His career faced a significant challenge in 2013 when he underwent Tommy John surgery. After a period of recovery, he returned to play for the Tampa Yankees in 2014 and was promoted to the Trenton Thunder. In 2015, Goody made his Major League debut with the Yankees and spent the season moving between Triple-A and the majors. He later joined the Cleveland Indians in 2017, where he became a reliable reliever, recording a 2.80 ERA with 72 strikeouts in 54.2 innings. Despite injuries in 2018, he returned to significant form in 2019.
In 2019, Goody recorded a 3.45 ERA with 50 strikeouts over 40.2 innings in 39 appearances for the Cleveland Indians. He then moved to the Texas Rangers for the 2020 season. His later career included stints with the New York Yankees again in 2021, followed by contracts with the Washington Nationals, and a third minor league contract with the New York Yankees. In 2022, he played for the Acereros de Monclova of the Mexican League and the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, continuing to demonstrate his durability and skill on the mound.
