Nik Richie, born Hooman Abedi Karamian on February 12, 1979, in Hackensack, New Jersey, is an American Internet personality. Before his digital media career, he worked as a credit card processor and also attempted to manage bands, engaging in a scheme to connect aspiring musicians with labels. In March 2007, Richie launched DirtyScottsdale.com, a hyperlocal party gossip forum in Scottsdale, Arizona, leveraging the pseudonym Nik Richie to maintain anonymity. The site focused on the local club scene, allowing users to submit content about others. This platform evolved into the more widely known TheDirty.com.
TheDirty.com, co-founded with Ari Golden, allowed users to anonymously upload and comment on posts encompassing news, gossip, accusations, photos, videos, and text. Richie operated the site anonymously until his arrest for DUI and reckless driving in Scottsdale in September 2008, after which his identity was publicly revealed. The website gained significant notoriety, attracting millions of page views monthly and becoming a source for various scandals involving public figures. Facing numerous defamation lawsuits, Richie successfully leveraged Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which protects website operators from liability for third-party content, in a significant appeal in 2014 following a lawsuit brought by Sarah Jones. This established a strong legal precedent for his platform.
Over his career, Richie transitioned from focusing on “civilian gossip” to engaging with celebrity news. He broke high-profile stories such as Anthony Weiner’s second sex scandal in 2013 and Hulk Hogan’s sex tape in 2012. In 2013, he released a memoir, “Sex, Lies and The Dirty.” In April 2018, Richie retired from his association with TheDirty.com, stating his departure in a March 2019 Instagram post. In 2017, Emmett/Furla announced plans to develop a scripted TV series based on his memoir. Richie was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2015, which he stated influenced his decision to seek a more respectable public image.
