Nyle Dimarco was born in Queens, New York, on May 8, 1989. Growing up in Frederick, Maryland, he attended the Maryland School for the Deaf and later graduated from Gallaudet University in 2013 with a degree in mathematics. Initially working in modeling and acting, he gained significant recognition in 2015 as the first Deaf contestant and male winner of “America’s Next Top Model” (Cycle 22). This was followed by a victory in 2016 on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” (Season 22) with professional partner Peta Murgatroyd, making him the first Deaf celebrity to win any global version of the show. His early acting roles include Garrett Banducci in “Switched at Birth” (2014-2015) and Doug in Hulu’s “Difficult People” (2016).
Transitioning into production, Dimarco became a producing member of the 2018 Broadway revival of “Children of a Lesser God” and executive produced the Netflix reality series “Deaf U” (2020) and the Oscar-nominated documentary short “Audible” (2021). In 2022, he released his memoir, “Deaf Utopia: A Memoir–And a Love Letter to a Way of Life.” In 2025, he co-directed and produced the Apple TV+ documentary “Deaf President Now!,” focusing on the pivotal 1988 student protest at Gallaudet University. This film, co-directed with Davis Guggenheim, earned him two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special and Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program.
Beyond his entertainment career, Dimarco is a dedicated activist and founder of The Nyle DiMarco Foundation, which promotes bilingual education initiatives and works to improve access to accurate information about early language acquisition for Deaf children and their families. He is an ally and influencer with the United Nations, contributing to their 2030 Sustainable Development Goals by focusing on education and accessibility. Dimarco uses his public platform to bring awareness to Deaf culture and challenge the perception of deafness as a disability, advocating for more nuanced and authentic representation of Deaf experiences in media.
