Nyma Tang was born in Gambela, Ethiopia, to South Sudanese parents. Her family moved to the United States when she was three years old, and she is the eldest of seven sisters. Tang initially pursued a nursing career, attending school for nursing. However, during her first semester of clinicals, she realized the path was not aligned with her interests and chose to withdraw. This turning point led her to explore her passion for beauty.
Tang launched her YouTube channel at the age of 25, focusing on beauty content. Her channel gained significant traction, particularly with her series “The Darkest Shade,” which started in 2017. In this series, she reviewed the darkest shades of makeup products from various brands, drawing attention to the under-representation of deeper skin tones in the beauty industry. This initiative aimed to help individuals with darker skin find suitable makeup matches and advocated for broader inclusivity and shade ranges from cosmetic companies. Her work earned her a Shorty Award for Best in Beauty in 2018.
Her influence expanded beyond her YouTube platform through various collaborations and consulting roles. In 2018, she collaborated with MAC Cosmetics to create her own lipstick shade, ‘Nyma Tang.’ She has also engaged in partnerships with major brands such as Fenty Beauty, Bobbi Brown, Pat McGrath, L’Oréal, and Estée Lauder. Currently, she serves as a Beauty Inclusivity Consultant for CVS, identifying new brands for in-store stocking and conducting in-house consulting. She also launched a Masterclass on hair, skincare, and makeup, featuring Black artists, further solidifying her commitment to representation and education within the beauty sector.
