Born on November 12, 2002, in Seattle, Washington, Paolo Banchero demonstrated exceptional athletic talent from a young age, excelling in both basketball and American football. His early development in basketball was significantly influenced by his mother, Rhonda Smith-Banchero, a former professional basketball player. Banchero attended O’Dea High School in Seattle, where he quickly became a standout, leading his team to a state championship and earning state and national accolades. By his junior year, he was recognized as the Washington Gatorade Player of the Year and MaxPreps National Junior of the Year, showcasing his potential as a top-tier athlete. In 2021, he was named to the McDonald’s All-American Game and Jordan Brand Classic rosters.
Banchero’s collegiate career at Duke University was marked by immediate impact. In his freshman season (2021-2022), he started all 39 games, averaging 17.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. He earned consensus second-team All-America honors and was named the ACC Freshman of the Year. Following this successful season, Banchero declared for the 2022 NBA Draft, where he was selected as the first overall pick by the Orlando Magic. His professional debut in October 2022 saw him replicate a feat only achieved by LeBron James, recording at least 25 points, five rebounds, and five assists in his first NBA game. He concluded his inaugural NBA season by being named the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2023.
His career progression continued with notable achievements in the 2023-2024 season, including his first NBA All-Star selection in 2024. Banchero set new career highs in points and showcased his versatility by recording his first career triple-double. During the 2024 NBA Playoffs, he made his postseason debut, delivering strong performances including a 31-point, 14-rebound game, and later a playoff career-high of 39 points. The 2024-2025 season saw him continue to break records, including a career-high 50-point game, before suffering a torn oblique that led to a temporary absence. He returned in January 2025, demonstrating resilience and continued high-level play, and signed a five-year maximum rookie extension with the Magic in July 2025.
