August 9, 1973, in South Bend, Indiana, Jimmy Hal King became a prominent figure in American basketball. He attended Plano East Senior High School in Plano, Texas, where he was recognized as a high school All-American basketball player. King then matriculated to the University of Michigan, becoming an integral member of the famed “Fab Five.” This collegiate tenure saw him contribute to teams that reached the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship games in both 1992 and 1993. He completed all four years of his college eligibility, concluding his senior year in 1995 with an average of 15 points per game.
King’s professional career commenced when he was selected by the Toronto Raptors in the second round, 35th overall pick, of the 1995 NBA Draft. During the 1995-96 NBA season, he played 62 games for the Toronto Raptors, contributing an average of 4.5 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. In July 1996, he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks, though he was subsequently waived. He later spent time with the Quad City Thunder in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) and had a brief two-game stint with the Denver Nuggets in April 1997, where he recorded six points, two rebounds, two assists, and three steals.
Throughout his career, King also played internationally in Europe and continued his notable performance in the CBA, being recognized as the league MVP in 1998 while with the Quad City Thunder. He represented the US national team in the 1998 FIBA World Championship, earning a bronze medal. Following his playing career, King has held roles outside of active play, including a period as a financial advisor for Merrill Lynch and as a radio color commentator for Michigan Wolverines basketball. Currently, he serves as Vice President at TruChampions, a high school sports recruiting solution. In 2016, King began coaching, taking on the head coach position for the Ecorse Community High School men’s basketball team.
