Paul Edward Goldschmidt was born on September 10, 1987, in Wilmington, Delaware. He grew up in The Woodlands, Texas, attending The Woodlands High School, where he played third base and contributed to a state championship win in 2006. He then played college baseball at Texas State University, where he excelled, earning the Southland Conference Hitter of the Year in both 2008 and 2009, and the Southland Player of the Year in 2009. In his junior year of 2009, he achieved third-team All-American honors, hitting .352 with 18 home runs and 88 RBIs in 57 games, setting Bobcats career records for home runs and RBIs.
Goldschmidt was initially drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2006 but did not sign. He was later selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the eighth round of the 2009 MLB draft. After signing, he quickly advanced through the minor leagues, making his MLB debut with the Diamondbacks in 2011. His tenure with Arizona saw him establish himself as a premier first baseman, earning multiple All-Star selections, Gold Glove Awards, and Silver Slugger Awards. In 2013, he led the National League in home runs and runs batted in, and finished second in MVP voting. He re-signed with the Diamondbacks for a significant contract extension in 2013, securing his future with the team for several years.
In December 2018, Goldschmidt was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, where he continued his high level of play. He signed a five-year, $130 million extension with the Cardinals in 2019, the largest in team history at the time. His time with the Cardinals was marked by continued accolades, including his first National League Most Valuable Player Award in 2022. He also played a key role in the Cardinals’ postseason runs. After a successful period with St. Louis, Goldschmidt joined the New York Yankees in 2025, signing a one-year deal, and later re-signed for 2026. Throughout his career, Goldschmidt has also proudly represented the United States in multiple World Baseball Classics, earning a gold medal in 2017 and two silver medals.
