Paul Reiser was born on March 30, 1956, in New York City. He pursued music, piano, and composition at the State University of New York at Binghamton, where he also engaged in student theater productions. During his university summer breaks, Reiser began performing stand-up comedy at clubs like the Improv and Comic Strip, laying the groundwork for his extensive career. His professional journey began to gain momentum with notable film roles in the early 1980s, establishing him as a recognizable presence in Hollywood.
Reiser’s acting career includes significant roles in films such as “Diner” (1982), “Beverly Hills Cop” (1984), “Aliens” (1986), and “Beverly Hills Cop II” (1987). On television, he co-created and starred in the NBC series “Mad About You” (1992–1999), receiving Emmy, Golden Globe, American Comedy Award, and Screen Actors Guild nominations for Best Actor. His writing extends beyond screenplays, with his book “Couplehood” becoming a New York Times best-seller, selling over two million copies. He followed this success with “Babyhood” and “Familyhood,” both offering humorous perspectives on family life. His development company, Nuance Productions, has also produced several television projects.
More recently, Reiser has maintained an active presence in both film and television. He starred in Showtime original movies “Strange Relations” (2001) and “Women vs. Men” (2002), and wrote and starred in his original screenplay “The Thing About My Folks” (2005). He has also appeared in the Amazon Original Series “Red Oaks,” Netflix’s “Stranger Things” (starting in 2017), and “The Kominsky Method” (2019-2021), earning an Emmy nomination for the latter. In 2022, he appeared in “The Boys” and is set to reprise his role in 2026. Reiser continues to perform stand-up comedy, with Comedy Central ranking him among the “Top 100 Comedians of All Time.” He is also set to co-write a new Marvel comic, “Aliens: What If…?” in 2024, revisiting his character Carter Burke.
