Paul Stephen Wallace was born on December 30, 1971, in Cork, Ireland. He began his rugby career playing for amateur teams such as University College Cork (UCC) from 1991 to 1994 and Blackrock College from 1994 to 1996. Wallace made his international debut for Ireland against Japan in the 1995 Rugby World Cup. He went on to earn 46 caps for Ireland between 1995 and 2002. His professional club career included stints with Saracens from 1996 to 2001, where he played 67 times, and Leinster from 2001 to 2003, making 24 appearances. He played as a tight-head prop and was recognized for his effective scrummaging and ball skills.
A significant milestone in Wallace’s career was his selection for the 1997 British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa. During this successful tour, he made six appearances, including playing the full duration of all three Test matches. Tour manager Fran Cotton referred to him as the ‘cornerstone of the Lions scrum.’ He retired from rugby in December 2003 after winning the Celtic League with Leinster. Following his retirement, Wallace became a pundit for Sky Sports, offering analysis during rugby union broadcasts. He also contributes to the Irish Daily Mail and Today FM’s ‘The Last Word’ radio show as a rugby panellist. He serves as a judging panel member for the International Rugby Board Player of the Year Award.
Beyond his media commitments, Wallace pursued a career in property finance. He is a director at Bircroft Property Finance (Ireland), an international debt structuring firm for commercial property. Prior to this, he worked with Jones Lang La Salle, focusing on international commercial property sales and acquisitions. Wallace also maintains strong philanthropic interests, particularly in cancer research, actively organizing fundraising events like the CROSS Cycle. His brothers, Richard and David Wallace, also played rugby for Ireland and the British & Irish Lions, marking a unique family achievement reflected in the Guinness Book of Records.
