Paul ‘Pablo’ Wilson was born on October 20, 1978, in Kinlochleven, Argyll, Scotland. From a young age, Wilson expressed a strong desire to pursue a career in music, stating that it was the only profession he ever envisioned for himself. He developed a diverse musical skill set, becoming proficient in multiple instruments including piano, guitar, bass, drums, and banjo. His formal musical education included piano studies. Wilson’s early career began in 2000 when he joined the Glasgow-based band Terra Diablo as a guitarist. During this period, Terra Diablo frequently supported Snow Patrol on tour, and Wilson would often join Snow Patrol on stage, contributing guitar and keyboard parts, establishing a connection with the band members with whom he had been friends since 1995.
In March 2005, following the departure of Snow Patrol’s previous bassist, Mark McClelland, Wilson was invited by vocalist Gary Lightbody to join the band as their new bassist. He accepted the offer and made his debut as a permanent member on April 1, 2005, in Dingle. During his tenure with Snow Patrol, Wilson primarily played a black Rickenbacker bass and was responsible for writing bass lines, often collaborating with drummer Jonny Quinn to develop riffs and chord progressions. He also occasionally contributed guitar and piano to recordings and performed keyboards live for tracks such as “Just Say Yes.” His work with Snow Patrol included several successful albums, such as “Eyes Open” (2006), “A Hundred Million Suns” (2008), “Fallen Empires” (2011), and “Wildness” (2018).
In September 2023, Wilson departed from Snow Patrol to concentrate on his metal project, Above as Below. This decision reflected a shift in his musical priorities and a desire to explore heavier music genres, which he had a long-standing passion for, as evidenced by his earlier work with Terra Diablo and also playing lead guitar in Nate Mendel’s band, Lieutenant. He released the song “Luna” as part of this new endeavor. Wilson emphasizes that his decision to leave Snow Patrol was driven by creative aspirations to pursue his own music, rather than any negative sentiment towards his former bandmates.
