Perry Groves, born on April 19, 1965, in Bow, London, began his football journey with Colchester United, signing as an apprentice in 1981 and turning professional a year later. Over four seasons, he played 142 league games for Colchester United, scoring 26 goals. His performance led to his transfer to Arsenal in September 1986 for £50,000, becoming the first signing under manager George Graham. At Arsenal, Groves was known for his enthusiasm, pace, and hard work as a left winger. He contributed to Arsenal’s 1987 Littlewoods Cup final triumph and was a finalist again in 1988.
Groves was part of the Arsenal squads that won the League Championship in 1988–89 and 1990–91. Although often appearing as a substitute, his contributions were significant, including helping create space for Michael Thomas’s title-clinching goal in 1989. He made 155 League appearances for Arsenal, scoring 21 goals, before moving to Southampton in August 1992 for £750,000. His professional playing career was cut short at Southampton due to two serious Achilles tendon injuries, leading to his retirement from top-flight football at 28. He briefly played for Dagenham & Redbridge and Canvey Island in non-league football afterward.
Following his retirement from professional football, Groves established a career in sports media. He has worked as a well-established sports pundit for various media firms, including Sky Sports, BBC Radio 5 Live, BT Sport, Absolute Radio, and Talksport. In 2010, he co-founded “Play With A Legend,” a company that organizes unique footballing events with ex-footballers for various occasions. He continues to be a familiar face at Emirates Stadium, contributing as a co-commentator for Arsenal TV Online. His autobiography, “We All Live in a Perry Groves World,” was published in 2006.
