Former American professional tennis player Peter Blair Fleming was born in New Jersey and was a hugely successful doubles player. He had most success with his countryman and tennis legend John McEnroe. Together the pair won an incredible number of tournaments, claiming 52 major titles in all. Seven of these came in high profile Grand Slams and they include four at Wimbledon and then three at the US Open.
Playing on his own after a hugely successful junior career that saw him pick up many titles, his solo career took him to a highest ever career ranking of eighth in the world, with him winning three titles in that time including the 1979 Cincinnati Open. It was in doubles that Peter was unbeatable, though, and with John he truly dominated on the world stage. Humble to the end, Peter once famously said “The best doubles pair in the world is John McEnroe and anyone”, but his own physical game, technical prowess and mental toughness surely played a part in their great run. After leaving the age behind, Peter has carried on playing the game he loves – golf! He is an active member of The Stage Golf Society and is also a regular commentator on Sky Sports and Eurosport as well as the BBC when it comes to their tennis coverage. Fleming reached the World No. 1 doubles ranking in 1984. His career-high singles ranking was World No. 8 in 1980, the year in which he reached the quarter-finals at the Wimbledon championships.
