Puja Tomar’s journey is a testament to resilience and determination. Born in Budhana village, Uttar Pradesh, she faced societal stigma from an early age, especially as a girl aspiring to excel in sports. After losing her father at 12, she sought strength through martial arts, beginning with karate and kickboxing. This pursuit not only became a means of self-defense but also a pathway to empowerment. What started as a personal quest transformed into a mission to inspire others, particularly young girls in India.
Turning professional in 2013, Tomar quickly made her mark in the mixed martial arts world, competing in regional promotions like the Super Fight League before signing with ONE Championship. Despite early setbacks, including losses to formidable opponents, she persevered, ultimately winning the MFN Women’s Strawweight Championship in 2022. Her tenacity paid off when she signed with the UFC in 2023, making history as the first Indian woman to do so.
On June 8, 2024, she debuted against Rayanne dos Santos, winning by split decision and becoming the first Indian woman to secure a victory in the UFC. “We are not going to stop!” she declared, embodying the fighting spirit she wishes to instill in others. Training at Soma Fight Club in Bali, Tomar continues to push boundaries, driven by her mother’s simple yet powerful advice: “Puja, just fight.” Her story is not just about personal triumph; it’s about paving the way for future generations of female fighters in India.
