Ice hockey superstar Quinn Hughes is an extraordinarily talented defenceman who plays for the Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League (NHL). In terms of raw skill he is already the best defenceman to ever wear a Canucks Jersey, and his overall offensive prowess, vision and skating is unprecedented in the history of the organization. Not just an offensive phenomenon, his defensive game has evolved in leaps and bounds, and he can use his skating as an effective preventative force. The youngster has already smashed the legendary Doug Lidster’s points record in a season, and undoubtedly has the potential to become a franchise-altering defenceman for the Canucks.
Hailing from Orlando, Florida, playing hockey is a family affair for Hughes, who is the son of former player for Providence College and assistant coach for the Boston Bruins, Jim Hughes. His mother Ellen Weinberg-Hughes played for the United States women’s national ice hockey team and his younger brothers are also both successful ice hockey players. The Hughes family moved to Toronto early in the defenceman’s life while his father worked with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the young ice hockey star began his career playing for the Toronto Marlboros before joining the USA Hockey National Team Development Program.
Following his success with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program and a spell at the University of Michigan for the 2017–18 season, Hughes was considered a top prospect player. The Canucks picked Hughes seventh overall in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, and since then his star has continued to rise in the world of ice hockey.
