About

Rainn Percival Dietrich Wilson was born in Seattle, Washington, on January 20, 1966. He spent part of his early childhood in Nicaragua before returning to Seattle. Wilson graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois, after his family relocated to serve at the Baháʼí National Center. His educational journey in acting began at the University of Washington, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in drama in 1986, followed by a Master of Fine Arts from New York University’s Graduate Acting Program at the Tisch School of the Arts.

Wilson’s career initially flourished in theater, with performances in notable productions such as ‘Venus’ at The Public Theater in 1996 and three Helen Hayes Award nominations for his work at the Arena Stage. He transitioned into film and television with an appearance in the soap opera ‘One Life to Live’ in 1997 and his feature film debut in ‘Galaxy Quest’ in 1999. Early supporting roles included ‘Almost Famous’ (2000), Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Full Frontal’ (2002), and Rob Zombie’s ‘House of 1000 Corpses’ (2003). A significant turning point came with his recurring role as Arthur Martin in the HBO series ‘Six Feet Under’ from 2003 to 2005, which earned him a Screen Actors Guild award as part of the best drama ensemble.

His breakthrough role arrived in 2005 as Dwight Schrute in the American adaptation of ‘The Office,’ a character for which he received three consecutive Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series from 2007 to 2009. Beyond ‘The Office,’ Wilson expanded his repertoire with lead roles in comedies ‘The Rocker’ (2008) and ‘Super’ (2010), and vocal performances in animated films like ‘Monsters vs. Aliens’ (2009) and ‘Smurfs: The Lost Village’ (2017). He has also taken on guest-starring roles, such as Harry Mudd in ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ (2017) and reprised the role in ‘Star Trek: Short Treks’ (2018), which he also directed. His work extends to executive producing and writing, co-founding the digital media company SoulPancake in 2008 and publishing his autobiography, ‘The Bassoon King,’ in 2015. Most recently, he starred in the travel series “Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss” (2023) for Peacock and is set to appear in the film “Code 3” (2025).
