Marin Hinkle was born on March 23, 1966, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to American parents who met during their service in the Peace Corps. Her family relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, when she was four months old. Her father, Rodney, was a retired school teacher, and her mother, Margaret, served as a judge in the Massachusetts Superior Court. Initially, Hinkle pursued a career in ballet, studying dance until an ankle injury at age 16 altered her path. She subsequently attended Brown University and later earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from New York University’s Graduate Acting Program in 1991. Her early career successes included performances in New York theater productions such as “Electra” and “The Tempest.”
Hinkle transitioned to a prominent career in television and film, gaining recognition for her co-starring role as Judy Brooks in the ABC drama series “Once and Again,” which ran from 1999 to 2002 for 58 episodes. Following this, she secured the role of Judith Harper on the popular CBS sitcom “Two and a Half Men,” appearing in 84 episodes from 2003 to 2015. Her work on this series made her a familiar face to a wide audience. She also made guest appearances on several television shows including “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” Her film credits during this period included roles in “I’m Not Rappaport,” “Frequency,” “I Am Sam,” and “Dark Blue.”
More recently, Hinkle has received critical acclaim for her role as Rose Weissman in the Amazon Prime Video comedy-drama series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” appearing in 43 episodes from 2017 to 2023. For her performance, she was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2019 and 2020. She has also appeared in films like “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” (2017) and “Jumanji: The Next Level” (2019), and television series such as “Madam Secretary” (2014–2019) and “Speechless” (2016–2019). Her career continues to evolve with upcoming projects like “Welcome to the Fishbowl” and “The Electric State” in 2025.
