About

Ralph George Macchio Jr. was born on November 4, 1961, in Huntington, Long Island, New York. His career began in the late 1970s with television commercials, leading to a regular role in the series ‘Eight Is Enough’ in 1980. In 1983, Macchio gained recognition for his role as Johnny Cade in Francis Ford Coppola’s film ‘The Outsiders’, an adaptation of the S.E. Hinton novel. This early success set the stage for his breakout role in 1984.

Macchio’s career reached widespread recognition when he starred as Daniel LaRusso in ‘The Karate Kid’ (1984). The film’s success led to two sequels, ‘The Karate Kid Part II’ (1986) and ‘The Karate Kid Part III’ (1989), solidifying his image as Daniel LaRusso. Beyond the ‘Karate Kid’ series, he diversified his roles, appearing in the blues road movie ‘Crossroads’ (1986) and the comedy ‘My Cousin Vinny’ (1992) alongside Joe Pesci. In ‘My Cousin Vinny’, Macchio played Bill Gambini, a young man wrongfully accused of murder, showcasing his range as an actor. He also took on stage roles, including a performance in ‘Cuba and His Teddy Bear’ on Broadway in 1986 with Robert De Niro, and later a U.S. tour revival of ‘How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying’ in 1996, which garnered positive reviews.

More recently, Macchio reprised his role as Daniel LaRusso in the acclaimed television series ‘Cobra Kai,’ which premiered in 2018 and concluded in 2025. This series, initially on YouTube Red and later moving to Netflix, explored the continuing story of his character and Johnny Lawrence. For his work on ‘Cobra Kai’, he received nominations for two Critics’ Choice Awards and a Primetime Emmy Award. In 2022, Macchio published his memoir, ‘Waxing On: The Karate Kid and Me,’ which became a New York Times bestseller. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2024 and continues to engage in new projects, including the upcoming film ‘Karate Kid: Legends’ in 2025, where he once again portrays Daniel LaRusso.
