About

Raymond James Houghton, born on January 9, 1962, in Castlemilk, Glasgow, Scotland, began his professional football career at West Ham United. After minimal first-team appearances, he moved to Fulham in 1982, where he established himself as a midfielder, playing 145 times and scoring 21 goals over four years. His career progressed with a move to Oxford United in 1985 for £147,000, where he notably scored in their 1986 League Cup final victory against Queens Park Rangers. This period showcased Houghton’s capabilities as a dynamic and influential player in English football.

Houghton’s career reached new heights when he joined Liverpool in 1987 for £825,000, becoming an integral part of Kenny Dalglish’s successful side. During his five years at Anfield, he played 202 games, scoring 38 goals, and contributed to winning two Football League First Division titles (1987–88, 1989–90) and two FA Cups (1988–89, 1991–92). His international career for the Republic of Ireland, for whom he qualified through his father, saw him score two significant goals in major tournaments: against England in the 1988 European Championship and against Italy in the 1994 FIFA World Cup. These moments cemented his legacy as a national hero.

Following his impactful tenure at Liverpool, Houghton moved to Aston Villa in 1992, playing 117 times and securing another League Cup in 1994. He continued his playing career with Crystal Palace and Reading before concluding at Stevenage Borough in 2000. Post-retirement, Houghton transitioned into a media career, becoming a pundit and commentator for prominent sports outlets such as RTÉ Sport, TalkSPORT, and Sky Sports. He also served as an ambassador for the Football Association of Ireland and received an honorary degree from the University of Huddersfield in 2005 for his contributions to sport.
