Alexander Johan Hjalmar Skarsgård was born in Stockholm, Sweden, on August 25, 1976. He is the eldest son of renowned actor Stellan Skarsgård and physician My Skarsgård. Growing up in modest circumstances, he began acting at age eight. After an early role in “Åke and His World” (1984) and a prominent part in the Swedish television production “The Dog That Smiled” (1989) at age 13, he decided to step away from acting due to the discomfort of fame. At 19, he completed compulsory military service in the Swedish Navy and later studied English at Leeds Metropolitan University before enrolling in a theater course at Marymount Manhattan College in New York City. His time in New York solidified his desire to pursue acting.
Upon returning to Sweden, Skarsgård resumed his acting career in various film, television, and theatrical productions. His first American film role was in “Zoolander” (2001). A significant turning point came with his casting as US Marine Brad Colbert in the HBO miniseries “Generation Kill” (2008), filmed over seven months in Namibia. This role led to his international breakthrough as Eric Northman, a 1,000-year-old Viking vampire, in the hit HBO series “True Blood” (2008–2014), which earned him widespread recognition. He also co-wrote and co-directed the award-winning short film “To Kill A Child” (2003), which was featured at the Tribeca and Cannes Film Festivals.
Skarsgård continued to expand his career with notable film roles, including “Melancholia” (2011), “Battleship” (2012), “The Legend of Tarzan” (2016), and “The Northman” (2022), which he also produced. On television, he garnered critical acclaim and awards for his portrayal of Perry Wright in “Big Little Lies” (2017–2019), for which he won a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award. His recurring role as tech mogul Lukas Matsson in “Succession” (2021–2023) earned him additional Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. His filmography also includes “Godzilla vs. Kong” (2021), “Infinity Pool” (2023), and the upcoming sci-fi comedy series “Murderbot” (2025). He also appeared in Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” music video (2009).
