Sporting legend Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini is a former professional boxer. Holding the WBA Lightweight Champion title in the eighties was a highlight of Mancini’s glory days in the ring. Well remembered for his fights against the likes of Arguello and Frias, there was a time when Mancini was an unstoppable force. Born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio, Mancini’s passion for boxing was developed and nurtured by his father. Like his father Lenny, Mancini shone in the ring that overshadowed many of his peers at the time. Now a celebrated sportscaster, producer and actor, Mancini is one of the most recognisable television personalities on our screens.
Celebrated for his remarkable boxing career, Mancini was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2015. Taking down the WBA lightweight champion Arturo Frias became a career highlight for Mancini. The match was held at The Aladdin, Las Vegas, and fans were left in awe of Mancini’s unyielding prowess in the ring. In a career full of highs, Mancini has also faced life-altering adversity. While challenging South Korea’s Duk Koo Kim, Mancini delivered an action-filled fight. Although Mancini won by TKO, Kim later passed away after a subdural hematoma four days later. Sports Illustrated later published the famous “Tragedy in the Ring” article which showcased the traumatic event. As a result, the WBC changed their ruling on its title bouts.
Hosting his regular podcast “Ray’s Boom Boom Room,” Mancini delivers a unique insight into his world. Now a prolific actor and producer, Mancini can be seen in the crime-comedy “Burnt” which follows the story of two hitmen. With other credits including “The Lineup: Boxing’s Greatest,” “Bad Frank” and “Who’s the Boss,” Mancini has cemented himself as an all-round entertainer in his post-boxing career.
