Rebekah Bruesehoff, born on January 1, 2007, in Camden County, New Jersey, began her journey into public advocacy at the age of ten in 2017. Her activism gained significant attention when a photo of her holding a sign reading, “I’m the scary transgender person the media warned you about,” went viral at a Jersey City rally. This event was a response to the federal administration’s decision to rescind guidance for transgender students in schools. Fueled by the stories of others and her own experiences, Bruesehoff committed to using her platform to foster understanding and advocate for transgender people, speaking at various events and engaging with major news outlets.
Over the years, Bruesehoff has consistently worked to promote policy change and ensure the representation of LGBTQ+ voices. In 2018, at age eleven, she notably spoke at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Youth Gathering in Houston, Texas, becoming the first transgender person to address the event’s 32,000 attendees. The following year, she testified before the New Jersey state legislature in support of a bill requiring LGBTQ+ inclusive curriculum in schools, which was subsequently signed into law by Governor Phil Murphy in 2019. Her advocacy extends to writing, with her first op-ed published in The Philadelphia Inquirer in 2019, supporting the Babs Siperstein Law to allow gender marker changes on birth certificates. She has also collaborated on books, including “A Kids Book About Being Inclusive” released in 2021 with fellow activist Ashton Mota and GenderCool.
Bruesehoff’s work has earned her significant recognition and collaborations. She was featured in Marvel’s Hero Project as “Mighty Rebekah” in 2019 and was a finalist for Time magazine and Nickelodeon’s “Kid of the Year” in 2020. Her commitment to advocacy has led to partnerships with organizations like The GenderCool Project, where she serves as a champion, contributing to their mission of evolving understanding and culture related to transgender and non-binary youth. In recent years, she has continued to partner with leaders and elected officials, leveraging her experiences as a young person, athlete, and author to advocate for transgender rights, including participating in a Human Rights Campaign video in 2023 advocating for transgender rights in sports. In October 2023, GLAAD named her one of their “20 Under 20,” further acknowledging her impact in the LGBTQ+ community.
