Reginald Lucien Frank Roger Watts was born on March 23, 1972, in Stuttgart, West Germany, to a French mother and an African-American father serving in the U.S. Air Force. His early life involved living in various European countries before his family settled in Great Falls, Montana, where he graduated high school in 1990. Watts began piano and violin lessons at age five and developed an early love for music, citing Ray Charles as an inspiration. At 18, he moved to Seattle to pursue music, studying at the Art Institute of Seattle and later jazz at Cornish College of the Arts.
Watts’ career began in 1996 as the frontman for the band Maktub. During this period, he also toured and recorded as a keyboardist for Wayne Horvitz’s 4+1 Ensemble. His adoption of a Line 6 DL4 delay modeler for live performances led to experiments with improvising entire songs as a solo act, performing in small Seattle venues. In 2004, Watts relocated to New York City and in 2005, released his first solo single, “So Beautiful.” He started blending spontaneous comedic material with his beatbox-driven musical compositions, creating comedic shorts for platforms like Superdeluxe, Vimeo, and CollegeHumor, with his video “What About Blowjobs?” becoming a viral success. Over the years, he made numerous television appearances, including on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” and providing voice work for “The Venture Bros.” and “The Electric Company.”
In 2010, Comedy Central aired his one-hour special, “Why Shit So Crazy?”, which was also released as a DVD/CD package. His second stand-up special, “A Live at Central Park,” premiered on Comedy Central in 2012. From 2012 to 2015, Watts gained broader recognition starring alongside Scott Aukerman on the IFC series “Comedy Bang! Bang!”. In 2013, he contributed to the launch of Jash, a comedy YouTube channel with Michael Cera, Tim & Eric, and Sarah Silverman. A significant career turning point came in 2015 when he became the bandleader and announcer for “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” a role he maintained until 2023. During this time, he released his Netflix special “Spatial” in 2016, which received critical acclaim. In 2023, Watts released his autobiography, “Great Falls, MT; Fast Times, Post-Punk Weirdos, and a Tale of Coming Home Again.”
