Regina Hall

Regina Hall was born on December 12, 1970, in Washington, D.C. She pursued higher education, graduating from Fordham University in 1992 with a Bachelor’s degree in English. She then continued her academic journey at New York University, earning a Master’s degree in journalism in 1997. Her career trajectory shifted towards acting when she began appearing in commercials in 1997 at the age of 26. This led to her cinematic debut in the 1999 film ‘The Best Man’, where she portrayed Candace “Candy” Sparks. The following year, she gained significant recognition for her role as Brenda Meeks in the comedy-horror spoof ‘Scary Movie’, a character she reprised in its sequels ‘Scary Movie 2’, ‘Scary Movie 3’, and ‘Scary Movie 4’. Her early 2000s work also included a recurring television role as Corretta Lipp on the prime-time drama ‘Ally McBeal’ starting in 2001, which later became a main character in the show’s fifth season.

Throughout her career, Hall has consistently delivered notable performances across various genres. Her filmography includes roles in ‘Love and Basketball’ (2000), ‘Paid in Full’ (2002), ‘Malibu’s Most Wanted’ (2003), ‘The Honeymooners’ (2005), and ‘First Sunday’ (2008). In 2009, she appeared in the action-drama ‘Law Abiding Citizen’, further showcasing her range. The 2010s saw her take on prominent parts in popular comedies such as ‘Think Like a Man’ (2012) and its sequel ‘Think Like a Man Too’ (2014), as well as ‘About Last Night’ (2014) alongside Kevin Hart. Her performance in ‘Girls Trip’ (2017) contributed to the film’s critical and commercial success. A significant turning point in her career was her lead role in ‘Support the Girls’ (2018), for which she became the first African American to win the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress, garnering widespread critical acclaim. This achievement led to her invitation to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences the same year.

Regina Hall has also expanded her career into production. In 2019, she began producing projects through her company, Rh Negative. Under this banner, she executive produced and starred in the occult drama ‘Master’ and produced and starred in the film ‘Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul.’ A significant development in her producing career includes striking an exclusive first-look deal with Showtime in October 2020 for television projects, followed by a six-film deal with ViacomCBS a few months later. In October 2024, she solidified her presence in the unscripted content space by signing a first-look deal with MGM Alternative, a division of Amazon MGM Studios, to develop and produce true crime, ensemble docuseries, and game genres. She also co-hosted the 94th Academy Awards in 2022 and has received honorary doctorate degrees from Dillard University (2019) and her alma mater, Fordham University (2025).
