Richard Coyle is a British actor who has played prominent roles on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. He first found fame in Britain playing Jeff Murdock in the BBC sitcom Coupling, a show that won awards and was voted as one of the best British sitcoms ever made. More recently, he has been seen playing Father Faustus Blackwood in the Warner Bros-produced Netflix series, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. In 2022, he appeared in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, becoming the third actor to play Aberforth Dumbledore from the iconic Harry Potter franchise. The film became one of the ten highest-grossing of the year.
Coyle was born in Sheffield and trained as an actor at the prestigious Old Vic Theatre School in Bristol. He began making film and television appearances in the late 1990s, commencing with a part in a TV adaptation of Macbeth and an episode of Hetty Wainthropp Investigates. From 2000 to 2002, he was one of the stars of Coupling, one of the most popular British sitcoms of the early Noughties. However, he didn’t want to be typecast and left the show ahead of its final series. He continued to act in a wide variety of roles afterwards, including the likes of Cracker and films such as The Libertine and Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.
Coyle has remained busy with a wide variety of roles ever since. His refusal to be pigeonholed meant that it wasn’t until 2018 that he finally took on another long-term part, playing Father Faustus in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
