About

Richard Coyle was born in Sheffield, UK, on February 27, 1972. He developed an early interest in drama while studying languages and art history at York University from 1992 to 1995, attending the Edinburgh Festival twice. A pivotal moment in his early career came when, to fund his studies at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, he took an extra job on a film adaptation of Jane Eyre. Director Franco Zeffirelli, upon learning of Coyle’s drama school aspirations, gave him his first on-screen line: “Mr. Rochester, Mr. Rochester, your house sir!” Coyle graduated in 1998, marking the official start of his professional acting career. He began with small roles in television and film.

Coyle gained significant recognition in 2000 with two prominent roles: “Jeff” in the BBC2 comedy series “Coupling” and “John Ridd” in the BBC’s Christmas production of “Lorna Doone.” His performance as Jeff Murdoch garnered popularity, but Coyle chose to leave “Coupling” after the third series to avoid typecasting and pursue a diverse range of roles. This decision highlighted his commitment to a long-term acting career where he could explore various characters and genres. Over the years, Coyle has built a solid portfolio in film, television, and theatre, taking on challenging parts and collaborating with respected directors and actors.

His career includes notable film credits such as “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” (2010), in which he played Tus, and “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” (2022), where he portrayed Aberforth Dumbledore. On television, he starred as Father Faustus Blackwood in “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” (2018–2020) and Paul Sabine in “The Collection” (2016). Coyle is also a distinguished stage actor, having performed in West End productions like “The York Realist,” “Proof” alongside Gwyneth Paltrow, and as Atticus Finch in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” His consistent work in varied projects demonstrates a career characterized by careful role selection and a steady progression in the entertainment industry.
