About

Joe Lo Truglio was born on December 2, 1970, in Ozone Park, Queens, New York City, and raised in Margate, Florida. Of Italian and Irish descent, his early interests included collecting Mad magazines, making amateur horror films with a Super 8 camera, and drawing comics. He graduated from Coconut Creek High School in 1988, where his theatrical talents earned him the “Critic’s Choice” award at a Thespian district competition. He continued his education at NYU Film school, where he co-founded the sketch comedy group “The State.” This period laid the groundwork for his future career in entertainment, emphasizing a collaborative and creative approach to comedy. After a run on MTV with “The State,” he moved into commercial, video-game, and episodic television work.

Following “The State’s” hiatus in 1996, Lo Truglio expanded his filmography with independent film roles around the millennium, including appearances in “Wet Hot American Summer” and “The Station Agent.” His career progressed with notable supporting roles in mainstream comedies such as “Superbad” (2007) as Francis the Driver, “Pineapple Express” (2008) as Mr. Edwards, “Role Models” (2008) as Kuzzik, and “Paul” (2011) as O’Reilly. He also contributed vocal talent to video games like “The Warriors” (2005) and “Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories” (2005). These roles showcased his versatility and sustained presence in both comedic and narrative projects.

A significant turn in his career came with his casting as Detective Charles Boyle in the Fox/NBC sitcom “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” which premiered in 2013. This role brought him widespread recognition and demonstrated his comedic timing and character development over eight seasons. Concurrently, he reprised his role as Neil in the Netflix series “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp” (2015) and “Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later” (2017). His work also includes writing and producing, contributing to web series and projects like “Outpost” (2022), which he also directed. Lo Truglio actively balances acting in major studio productions with independent film and television work.
