Rick Middleton, known as “Nifty,” is a celebrated former professional ice hockey player who made significant contributions to the National Hockey League (NHL) during his career with the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins. Drafted in the first round, 14th overall, by the Rangers in the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft, Middleton showcased his exceptional talent as a right winger with the Oshawa Generals, leading his league in scoring and earning a spot on the Second All-Star Team. His rookie season with the AHL’s Providence Reds saw him earn Rookie of the Year honors and a place on the First All-Star Team, setting the stage for his NHL debut in the 1974-75 season.
After a brief stint with the Rangers, Middleton was traded to the Boston Bruins in 1976, a move that would define his career. He quickly became a star, scoring a hat trick in his first game and accumulating nearly 900 points over the next twelve years. His remarkable consistency included five consecutive seasons with at least 40 goals and 90 points, demonstrating his offensive prowess and leadership as he was named co-captain in 1985. Middleton’s best season came in 1981-82 when he scored a career-high 51 goals and won the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship.
Middleton’s impact extended beyond regular-season play; he set multiple playoff records, including the most points scored by a player not advancing to the finals and the most points in a single playoff series. His international career was equally impressive, representing Team Canada in the Canada Cup and playing alongside legends like Wayne Gretzky. He was also a three-time NHL All-Star, further solidifying his status in the sport.
Upon retiring in 1988, Middleton left a legacy with 448 goals and 540 assists, ranking third on the Bruins’ all-time scoring list at the time. His contributions to the game were recognized when the Bruins retired his number 16 in 2018. Today, Middleton serves as the President of Boston Bruins Alumni and remains active in promoting hockey through various initiatives, including high school showcases and media analysis, ensuring his enduring influence on the sport.
