Rick Pitino

He began his head coaching journey at Boston University from 1978 to 1983, following assistant coaching stints at the University of Hawaii (1974-1976), where he also served as interim head coach in 1976, and Syracuse (1976-1978). Pitino transitioned to the NBA as an assistant coach for the New York Knicks from 1983 to 1985 before returning to college basketball. In 1985, as head coach for Providence College, he guided the team to the Final Four in 1987. From 1987 to 1989, he again joined the New York Knicks as head coach, leading the team to their first division title in nearly two decades in 1989.

Pitino’s impactful tenure at the University of Kentucky commenced in 1989, where he rebuilt the program following a recruiting scandal. After serving as head coach and president of basketball operations for the Boston Celtics from 1997 to 2001, he returned to the collegiate ranks with the University of Louisville in 2001. His profound contributions to the sport were recognized with his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013. In 2018, Pitino embarked on an international challenge, coaching Panathinaikos in the Greek Basket League and EuroLeague.

In March 2023, Pitino was named the head men’s basketball coach at St. John’s University, marking a significant return to the Big East conference. Continuing his trajectory of success, he led St. John’s to a Big East regular season title in 2025, further cementing his reputation for revitalizing programs and achieving championship-level performance across diverse coaching environments.
