Ricky Ponting

Ricky Ponting, a distinguished Australian cricket coach, commentator, and former player, made his first-class debut for Tasmania in November 1992, becoming the youngest player to participate in a Sheffield Shield match. He quickly showcased his talent, scoring twin centuries against Western Australia to become the youngest batsman in Shield history to achieve this feat. Following his debut, Ponting made his One Day International (ODI) debut in February 1995 against South Africa, and his Test debut in December 1995 against Sri Lanka, where he scored 96 runs. He continued to build his formidable playing career, scoring his first Ashes Test century (127) in 1997 and becoming the youngest batsman to score a World Cup century in 1996.

He achieved immediate success as a coach, leading the Mumbai Indians to a championship in the 2015 Indian Premier League (IPL). His contributions to the sport were recognized with an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2012, and he was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in 2018. A bronze statue was unveiled in his honour at Bellerive Oval in 2015. He also served as the head coach for the Delhi Daredevils/Capitals from 2018 to 2024.

Ponting continues his impactful coaching career, recently appointed as head coach for Punjab Kings ahead of the IPL 2025 season. He also led Washington Freedom to a tournament victory as head coach in the second season of Major League Cricket, further cementing his reputation as a successful and sought-after leader in the sport.
