Riddick Bowe is best known for his long standing and successful career as a professional boxing champion- he not only held the heavyweight title in all four of the major sanctioning bodies and held a career record of 43-1, but alongside Evander Holyfield, he took part in one of the best boxing trilogies ever, winning two of their three fights. Coming in and out of retirement, Bowe has shown he can’t stay away from the sport, and his dedication to the ring, even when he first burst onto the scene as an immediate sensation in the professional ranks, is palpable.
As an amateur, Bowe was already a foe to be reckoned with and earned himself a spot in the super heavyweight division at the 1988 Olympic Games. In his first year of professional competition, Bowe remained undefeated, and achieved nineteen KO’s from 1989 to 1990, facing huge names such as Tyrell Biggs, Tony Tubbs and Bruce Seldon and a multitude of others before taking on the other undefeated champion of the age, Evander Holyfield. The two titans met in 1992, with Bowe knocking Holyfield down in the eleventh round to protect his record of 32-0, and marking the first professional loss Holyfield had suffered. Because of his efforts, Bowe earned the Fighter Of The Year Honours in the same year.
Bowe was inducted into the International Boxing Hall Of Fame in 2015, and in 2019, World Boxing News reported that Bowe was seriously considering a return to the ring- in 2020, Alonzo Butler was noted as being a potential opponent for Bowe’s returning match.
