About

Robert David Keane, born on July 8, 1980, in Tallaght, Dublin, began his football journey with local youth clubs Fettercairn YFC and Crumlin United. He made an early impact, scoring twice on his professional debut for Wolverhampton Wanderers at just 17 in 1997. His potential was quickly recognized, leading to a record-breaking British transfer fee for a teenager when he joined Coventry City for £6 million in 1999. A brief stint at Inter Milan in 2000, under manager Marcello Lippi, was followed by a move to Leeds United, where he scored nine goals in 14 starts. In 2002, Keane found a long-term home at Tottenham Hotspur, a club where he truly thrived. He amassed 306 appearances and scored 122 goals across two spells, becoming the 11th highest goal-scorer in the club’s history. A notable milestone for Keane came in the 2007–08 season when he scored his 100th competitive goal for Tottenham and won his first senior honor, the League Cup.

Throughout his career, Keane earned a reputation as a dynamic striker known for his goal celebration, involving a cartwheel and a forward roll. After a short period at Liverpool in 2008, he returned to Tottenham before loan spells at Celtic and West Ham United. In 2011, he moved to LA Galaxy in Major League Soccer (MLS), where he enjoyed immense success. He won three MLS Cups (2011, 2012, 2014) and was named MLS MVP and MLS Cup MVP in 2014 for his outstanding performance of 19 goals and 14 assists in 29 appearances. Keane concluded his playing career in 2018 after a season with ATK in the Indian Super League, where he also served as player-manager. He became the Republic of Ireland’s most capped player with 146 appearances and all-time leading goal scorer with 68 goals, a record he held until his international retirement in 2016. His international career highlights include three goals at the 2002 FIFA World Cup and captaining the national team from 2006.

Following his retirement from playing, Keane transitioned into coaching. He served as assistant manager for the Republic of Ireland national team under Mick McCarthy and for Middlesbrough in the Championship. In June 2023, he took on his first managerial role as head coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv, leading the team to win the Israeli Premier League and the Toto Cup in his inaugural season. His coaching career continued with Ferencváros in January 2025, where he again secured a league title. His strategic insight and leadership skills, developed over a long and distinguished playing career, now contribute to the success of the teams he manages.
