Robert Downey Jr. was born on April 4, 1965, in Manhattan, New York. His father, Robert Downey Sr., was a filmmaker, and his mother, Elsie Ann Ford, was an actress. From a young age, Downey Jr. was immersed in the film industry, making his acting debut at age five in his father’s film, *Pound* (1970). He later studied at the Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts Training Center before moving to California with his father in 1978. In 1982, he left Santa Monica High School to pursue acting full-time in New York City.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Downey Jr. built his film repertoire with roles in films such as *Tuff Turf* (1985), *Weird Science* (1985), and *True Believer* (1989). A pivotal moment in his early career was his portrayal of Charlie Chaplin in the 1992 biopic *Chaplin*, which earned him an Academy Award nomination and a BAFTA Award for Best Actor. However, Downey Jr. faced significant personal challenges, including struggles with substance abuse from 1996 to 2001, leading to arrests and a period of incarceration. Despite these setbacks, he began to rebuild his career, notably joining the cast of the Fox-TV series *Ally McBeal* in 2000, for which he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.
His career saw a significant turnaround in 2003 after achieving sobriety. He made a notable comeback in films like *The Singing Detective* (2003) and *Kiss Kiss Bang Bang* (2005). The definitive resurgence came in 2008 with his starring role as Tony Stark/Iron Man in Marvel’s *Iron Man*, a role he reprised across multiple Marvel Cinematic Universe films, including *The Avengers* series, achieving global recognition and commercial success. He also garnered critical acclaim for his performance as Sherlock Holmes in the Guy Ritchie-directed films, earning a Golden Globe. More recently, he received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Lewis Strauss in *Oppenheimer* (2023). Downey Jr. also co-founded Team Downey Production Company with his wife, Susan Downey, expanding his involvement in film and television production.
