The first Muslim head coach in NFL history, Super Bowl winner Robert Saleh is the head coach of the New York Jets. Saleh has spent the majority of his 20-year coaching career as a defensive coach. From 2005 to 2020, he worked as an assistant coach for the San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans, Seattle Seahawks, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Seattle Seahawks. From 2017 to 2020, he held his first defensive coordinator position with the Niners. Saleh played in two Super Bowls, one with the 49ers and one with the Seahawks, winning in the latter.
Saleh agreed to a five-year contract on January 14, 2021 to lead the New York Jets. Saleh lost his first game as head coach against the Carolina Panthers on September 12, 2021, by a score of 19–14. On October 3, the Panthers defeated the Tennessee Titans 27-24 in overtime to give Saleh his first win in charge. The Jets ended 4-13 in his debut campaign as head coach.
After Ed Khayat (Philadelphia Eagles 1971–72), Rich Kotite (Philadelphia Eagles 1991–94), and Abe Gibron (Chicago Bears 1972–1974), who are all of Lebanese heritage, Saleh is the fourth Arab-American head coach in the NFL. Both Saleh and his wife are Arabic speakers. Saleh served as the best man at the wedding of Matt LaFleur, the head coach of the Green Bay Packers. The two men became friends while serving as graduate assistants at Central Michigan in 2004 and as assistant coaches for the Houston Texans from 2008 to 2009.
