Roderick Duane Smith, born on May 15, 1970, in Texarkana, Arkansas, established an impactful career as a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL), playing his entire 12-season tenure with the Denver Broncos. His journey in football began at Missouri Southern State University, where he achieved remarkable success, setting conference records for career receiving yards (3,043) and touchdowns (34), and also breaking the school’s reception record (153). During his senior year, he was recognized as a first-team All-American by prominent athletic organizations. Smith’s academic accomplishments paralleled his athletic ones, as he earned three degrees in economics and finance, general business, and marketing and management, being named Missouri Southern’s Outstanding Graduate in 1994.
After going undrafted in 1994, Smith signed with the Denver Broncos as a free agent, spending his initial year on the practice squad. His NFL debut in 1995 marked the beginning of a distinguished career, characterized by eight seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards and two seasons with more than 100 receptions. He played a pivotal role in the Broncos’ consecutive Super Bowl victories in 1997 (Super Bowl XXXII) and 1998 (Super Bowl XXXIII), where he had a notable performance of 5 receptions for 152 yards and an 80-yard touchdown in Super Bowl XXXIII.
Smith concluded his professional playing career due to a hip injury, having undergone hip replacement surgery. He formally retired in 2008 and was inducted into the Denver Broncos Ring of Fame in 2012. He remains the Broncos’ all-time leader in receptions (849), receiving yards (11,389), and touchdown receptions (68). Beyond football, Smith has ventured into entrepreneurship and serves as a business coach, influencing both professionals and non-professionals.
