Rod Woodson

Roderick Kevin Woodson was born on March 10, 1965, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He attended Purdue University, where he excelled in both football and track and field, earning All-American honors in both sports. With degrees in electrical engineering and criminal justice, Woodson left Purdue with 13 individual football records, including 11 career interceptions. Drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers as the 10th overall pick in the 1987 NFL Draft, Woodson embarked on a distinguished 17-season professional career. His early years with the Steelers established him as a versatile and dominant force, capable of playing cornerback, safety, and contributing significantly as a kick and punt returner. His athleticism was evident, as he was a world-class 110-meter hurdler before fully committing to his NFL career.

Woodson spent his first ten years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1993. During this period, he was a consistent Pro Bowl and All-Pro selection, demonstrating exceptional skill in intercepting passes and making tackles. He later had shorter stints with the San Francisco 49ers and played a crucial role in the Baltimore Ravens’ Super Bowl XXXV championship team. His career concluded with the Oakland Raiders in 2003. Post-retirement, Woodson extended his influence through coaching roles with the Oakland Raiders and Denver Broncos, including a position as head coach and general manager for the XFL’s Vegas Vipers in 2023. He also served as an NFL analyst for NFL Network and Big Ten Network, leveraging his extensive experience in the sport.

Throughout his career, Woodson accumulated numerous accolades, including 11 Pro Bowl selections, 6 First-Team All-Pro selections, and being named to the NFL’s 1990s All-Decade Team and the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team. He holds NFL records for career interceptions returned for a touchdown (12) and fumble recoveries by a defensive player (32). His 71 career interceptions rank third all-time in NFL history. Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2009 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2016, Woodson’s career highlights reflect sustained excellence and significant impact on the game.
