About

Ronald Rauhe was born on October 3, 1981, in West Berlin, West Germany. His international career began early, when he was selected for the 1997 World Junior Championships in Lahti, Finland, at the age of fifteen. Competing against older athletes, he earned a gold medal in the K-4 500m and a silver in the K-1 500m. This early success continued at the next World Junior Championships in Zagreb, where he secured three more gold medals.

Rauhe’s senior national team debut in 1999 saw him immediately achieve a bronze medal in the K-1 200m World Championship final. His partnership with Tim Wieskötter, starting in 2000, proved highly successful, leading to multiple victories in the K-2 500m event, including six world titles and an Olympic gold in 2004. He also demonstrated individual dominance in the K-1 200m sprint, capturing three consecutive world and European golds. Despite a brief setback in 2005, Rauhe returned to top form in 2006, winning three gold medals at both the European and World Championships in Račice and Szeged, respectively. He also added a K-2 200m title to his achievements.

Throughout his extensive career, Rauhe participated in six Summer Olympics, securing two gold, one silver, and two bronze medals. His 50th national title in the K-1 500m was achieved on May 2, 2009, in Duisburg. In 2015, he earned a silver medal at the inaugural European Games in Minsk in the Men’s K-2 200m with Tom Liebscher. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, he secured a bronze medal in the K-1 200 metres, matching Saúl Craviotto’s time. His final Olympic gold came at the Tokyo 2020 Games in the K-4 500m event. Rauhe officially retired from competition after the Tokyo Olympics. He holds 16 world championship gold medals, the most among male kayakers, and a total of 26 World medals, surpassing his compatriot Torsten Gutsche’s record of 20 in 2011.
