Irani represented England in three Test matches between 1996 and 1999 and played 31 One Day Internationals (ODIs) from 1996 to 2003. He was recognized for his all-rounder capabilities, proficient in both batting and right-arm medium pace bowling. At Essex, he became a central figure, eventually taking on the captaincy in 2000. During his captaincy, he was instrumental in nurturing emerging talents such as Alastair Cook and Ravinder Bopara and contributed to Essex winning two significant One-Day Titles. His playing career saw him accumulate over 20,000 runs and take more than 650 wickets across all professional formats.
