Rory Delap is a former professional footballer recognized for his distinct long throw-in ability and subsequent transition into coaching roles within professional football clubs. After securing a Football League Trophy victory and promotion to Division Two with Carlisle United in 1997, Rory Delap went on to establish a distinguished playing career in professional football, making his senior debut for Carlisle in 1992. His consistent performances led to a £200,000 transfer to Premier League side Derby County in 1998, where he spent three years and notably became the club’s top scorer during the 1999-2000 season with eight goals. Delaps impact continued, earning him a significant move to Southampton in 2001 for a then-club-record fee of £4 million.
His contributions were recognized with the Stoke City Coaching Staff’s Player of the Year and Sir Stanley Matthews Potteries Footballer of the Year awards in the 200809 season. After six seasons and 180 league appearances with Stoke City, Delap concluded his playing career with brief stints at Barnsley and Burton Albion in 2013, officially retiring in December 2013. Following his retirement, Delap seamlessly transitioned into coaching, returning to Derby County. There, he coached the U18 team from 2015-2016 before advancing to Head Coach of the U21 team from 2016-2018.
During his tenure, Delap contributed to the team’s significant achievements, including winning the Israeli Premier League and the Toto Cup in 2024, before his departure from the club.
