Allen Bernard West was born on February 7, 1961, in Atlanta, Georgia. His family had a strong military background, with his father serving in World War II and his older brother in Vietnam. West joined the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps in high school and later the Army ROTC program at the University of Tennessee, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1983. He was commissioned as an officer in the Field Artillery branch and began his active duty in the U.S. Army. His early military career included assignments at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and airborne training at Fort Benning, Georgia, before he became an airborne infantry fire support officer and platoon leader.
Throughout his military career, West held various leadership positions, including commanding B Battery, 6th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, and serving as a battalion task force fire support officer during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He furthered his education with a master’s degree in political science from Kansas State University and a master of military arts and sciences degree from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff Officer College. He was recognized as the U.S. Army ROTC Instructor of the Year in 1993. His military service culminated with command of the 2d Battalion, 20th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, a role that saw him deployed to Iraq in 2003. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2004.
Following his distinguished military career, West entered the political arena. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Florida’s 22nd congressional district, serving from 2011 to 2013. During his tenure, he was a notable member of the Tea Party Caucus. After leaving Congress, he continued his involvement in conservative politics and media, serving as the Executive Director of the American Constitutional Conservative Rights Union and the ACRU Action Fund, a contributor to Fox News, and later as the chairman of the Texas Republican Party. He also made a gubernatorial bid in Texas in 2022 and became the chairman of the Dallas County Republican Party in 2024.
