Canadian Rosie MacLennan made history when she became the first gymnastic trampolinist to win back to back Olympic titles at Rio 2016. MacLennan – who was chosen as Canada’s flag bearer at the Rio Games – is also the first Canadian woman to win two gold medals at the Summer Olympic Games in an individual event and the first Canadian athlete to defend an individual Olympic title. She has now begun training in her quest for a third Olympic gold medal in trampoline at the Tokyo Summer Olympic Games in 2021.
Born in Ontario, Canada, MacLennan started gymnastics when she was 8 years old, then switched to trampoline when her siblings tried the sport first. She was inspired by trampoline trailblazer Karen Cockburn’s qualification for the Sydney Olympics in 2000, and in 2006 she was paired with her hero Cockburn in the synchronized trampoline. The duo went on to win eight World Cup events in a row and dominated the event at international level. She was selected to join Cockburn and Jason Burnett at her first Olympics in Beijing in 2008, and the following year she won the Canadian Women’s Individual title.
MacLennan picked up silver at the 2011 Trampoline World Championships and secured a place at the 2012 London Olympics for the Canadian women. The following year she put in the best performance of her career so far to score 57.305, taking Canada’s only gold medal at the games and the first trampoline gold medal in history for her country. Four years later, she made history again when she took her second Olympic title in Rio.
