About

Roseanne Barr was born on November 3, 1952, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to a working-class Jewish family. Her father, a salesman, fostered an early interest in comedy, a passion that would later define her career. At age 17, after a car accident that led to memory loss and nightmares, she was admitted to a mental institution, departing within a year. She also gave birth to her first daughter, Brandi Brown, at 17 and placed her for adoption; they later reconnected. Barr began her career in stand-up comedy at clubs in Denver and Los Angeles, culminating in an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” in 1985. Her 1987 HBO special, “On Location: The Roseanne Barr Show,” garnered her an American Comedy Award for funniest female performer.

The success of her stand-up act led to the development of her sitcom, “Roseanne,” which premiered on ABC in 1988. The show, co-starring John Goodman, gained widespread popularity for its realistic portrayal of a lower middle-class working family and its tackling of significant social issues. It quickly rose in the ratings, becoming the #2 show during its first season. Barr earned significant creative control over the series, influencing its direction and addressing complex topics within a comedic framework. During its run, Barr received an Emmy and a Golden Globe Award for her performance.

Following the sitcom’s nine-season run, Barr continued to appear in various television and film projects, including voicing a character in “Look Who’s Talking Too” (1990) and starring in “She-Devil” (1989). She authored two autobiographies, “Roseanne—My Life As a Woman” (1989) and “My Lives” (1994). Barr’s career also included hosting “The Roseanne Show” from 1998 to 2000 and a return to stand-up comedy with her HBO special “Roseanne Barr: Blonde N Bitchin'” (2006). In 2012, she ran for President of the United States under the Peace and Freedom Party, placing sixth. A revival of “Roseanne” aired in 2018 to high ratings but was canceled due to a controversial tweet by Barr.
